Why build a deck?
There are plenty of pleasurable reasons for having a deck. Wood boards form a very inviting surface for sitting and observing nature. But here are some practical reasons for building a deck, too:
- Turn the steep slope of a lot into usable "backyard" space.
- Extend a first-floor master suite with a deck, or enlarge an upstairs bedroom with an elevated balcony-deck.
- Cover up a shady corner where grass won't grow between right-angle walls of the house with a small, triangular deck (not elevated).
- Replace a skimpy concrete pad outside of sliding glass doors with a more worthwhile destination: a deck.
- Take advantage of a stately old tree or water view by constructing a freestanding deck away from the house.
- Put a screened gazebo on one corner of a deck for dramatic dining.
- Arrange plenty of pots overflowing with foliage and flowers on little pot feet around the deck for easier gardening and less weeding. And deck railings are perfect places to hang a series of "window boxes."
